The rule

• Birthday already passed in 2026: age = 2026 − birth year
• Birthday still to come: age = 2026 − birth year − 1

Example: born on 15 May 1990. On 6 October 2026 your birthday has passed, so 2026 − 1990 = 36 years. If you were born on 20 November 1990, you are still 35 on that date.

Why age can be tricky

• Birthday on 29 February: in years without 29 February, most people celebrate on 28 February or 1 March. Which day counts for legal age limits depends on the country and the rule; the calculator uses 28 February.
• Age on a specific date: for rules such as retirement age, age limits for jobs or voting age, your age on a particular date counts. Enter that date as the reference date in the calculator.
• Other cultures: some East Asian countries traditionally counted age from 1 at birth. South Korea officially switched to the international system in 2023.
