How the countdown works
The calculator counts the days from today to the date you choose. Today is not counted: "1 day to go" means the big day is tomorrow. The number of days is also the number of sleeps until the day, which is handy for children counting down to a birthday or Christmas.
You also see:
- weeks and days, for example 11 weeks and 3 days;
- months and days, taking the different month lengths into account;
- the number of weekdays (Monday to Friday) until the date, without subtracting public holidays;
- the number of hours, if you want to make it even more exciting.
Today's date comes from your own device, and nothing is stored.
Examples
On Tuesday, October 6, 2026:
- Christmas (Friday, December 25, 2026) is 80 days away: 11 weeks and 3 days, or 2 months and 19 days, of which 58 are weekdays.
- New Year's Day (Friday, January 1, 2027) is 87 days away.
- Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 26, 2026) is 51 days away.
- Halloween (Saturday, October 31, 2026) is 25 days away.
- A past date such as October 1, 2026 was 5 days ago.
If a well-known day has already passed this year, the calculator counts down to the same day next year. Thanksgiving is calculated as the fourth Thursday in November.
Counting days by hand
To do it in your head, count the remaining days of the current month, add the full months in between and finish with the days in the final month. From October 6 to December 25: 25 days in October (7 through 31), 30 in November and 25 in December = 80 days. Remember the rhyme: "Thirty days hath September, April, June and November"; February has 28 (29 in a leap year) and the rest have 31.
In Excel or Google Sheets, simply subtract two dates: =DATE(2026,12,25)-TODAY() gives the number of days until Christmas.
Ideas for a countdown
- Vacation: count down to your departure and plan when to book, pack or renew your passport.
- Birthday or anniversary: the age calculator also shows how many days until your next birthday.
- Pregnancy: your estimated due date and days to go are in the due date calculator.
- Deadlines and exams: check the number of working days too; the working days calculator also subtracts public holidays.
- Retirement: count down to your last working day or pension date.
For the exact difference between any two dates, neither of which is today, use days between dates.
Counting down with children
For young children "three weeks from now" is hard to grasp; "21 more sleeps" works much better. A few ideas to make a countdown fun:
- make a paper chain and tear off one link every day;
- draw a countdown calendar with a box for each day to cross off;
- use an Advent calendar in December, which counts down from December 1 to Christmas Eve;
- fill a jar with marbles or candy and take one out every day.
Use the calculator to work out how many links, boxes or marbles you need. Adults can use the same trick for a big trip, a wedding or the last stretch before retirement.
